The և ( ligature from ե ( Eč̕ ) and ւ ( Hiwn )) is the 37th letter of the Eastern Armenian alphabet ; it does not appear in Western Armenian. Since the Armenian spelling reforms of 1922–1924, the letter has represented the sound [ ɛv ] (initial [ jɛv ]) in Eastern Armenian and is transcribed in German with the digraph ew or (initial) with the trigraph jew . It only exists as a lowercase letter.
