The Museum 't Fiskershúske ( German  Das Fischerhäuschen ) is a small open-air museum in Moddergat in the Dutch province of Friesland . It shows how people in the area in Moddergat used to live mainly from fishing. The museum consists of several fishermen's houses and ancillary buildings, which have been preserved in situ and in some cases have been restored to their previous state. Some buildings are furnished, others are used for thematic exhibitions.

The history of the museum

The beginning of the museum was in 1962. The regional museum in Dokkum Het Admiraliteitshuis (German: the Admiralty House ) acquired the fisherman's house Visserspad 4 in Moddergat. The house was renovated and opened in 1965 as the museum's first house. It was furnished in the style of a fisherman's house in 1850. The museum property was expanded step by step with various neighboring houses and gardens. The first extensions in 1973 were Visserspad No. 6 (De Aek) and Visserspad No. 8 (De Blaes). In 1987 an exhibition room (De Logger) was set up on property Visserspad No. 8a. The Klaskes Húske with the associated aashok has also been owned by the museum since 1990 and was opened to the public in 1995. An aashok was a workshop in which the fisher women put the bait ( lugworms ) on the hooks. In 2003 the former shrimp factory was bought. In the following year, after a renovation, a copy of an old fishing boat was erected as a memorial, which was lost in the disaster of 1883.

Museum furnishings and exhibitions

The museum 't Fiskershúske consists of four renovated small Fiskershús and an exhibition building. The aim of the 't Fiskershúske Foundation is the preservation of several Fiskershúskes, as well as the collection and display of articles of daily use related to coastal fishing.

The Fiskerhúske shows a fisherman's house on the coast with the furnishings from 1850. The De Aek house houses the exhibition on fishing on the mudflats and the coast as well as the memory of the lifeboat. The catastrophic storm of 1883 and the wonderful rescue of the fisherman tanning handicraftsman are depicted. The Klaske's húske is decorated in the style of the twenties and fifties. There is a small shop and a café in house De Blaes . The logger is used for exhibitions. The former shrimp factory now serves as a visitor center and is rented out to groups.

Opposite the museum entrance there is a monument on the dike to commemorate the storm disaster of 1883, in which 83 fishermen, about 2/3 of the Moddergater fishermen drowned.
