.asia is the sponsored top-level domain of the DotAsia Organization , behind which the Afilias consortium stands. It was introduced by ICANN on May 2, 2007 and is primarily intended for natural persons and companies from the Asia-Pacific region .

history

The so-called sunrise period of the .asia domain began on October 9, 2007. As part of this, companies and public figures were initially able to secure their claims to certain domains, in particular to ensure trademark protection . The sunrise period ended on January 31, 2008. The Landrush Period began on March 20, 2008, and public registration for everyone on March 26, 2008.

Despite the transnational target group, .asia has not yet caught on internationally. In December 2011, just under 200,000 .asia domains were registered. The release of so-called internationalized domain names in 2012 and 2013 resulted in a short-term, immense increase in the number of registrations. To date, the number of .asia domains has dropped to almost 300,000 registrations.

Award criteria

A .asia domain can be requested by any natural or legal person . It is not necessary to be a resident or an office in the Asia Pacific region. The length of a domain could be between three and 63 characters, registration by DotAsia or Afilias usually takes place within a few hours. Since the end of 2011, single and double-digit domains under .asia have also been possible.

The ccTLD has supported the use of special characters as so-called internationalized domain names since July 2012 , so that, for example, Chinese characters can also be used. However, the function has not yet been implemented by all registrars. At the beginning, .asia domains had to be at least three characters long, but this restriction will no longer apply in October 2013 - domains with only one or two letters and pure numeric domains are then also possible.
