In 2012 Bavaria applied for its own top level domain .bayern as part of the application process for new generic top level domains (gTLD) . On September 29, 2014 Bayern Connect GmbH was awarded the gTLD .bayern . Leopold Prince of Bavaria is the patron of the project, the Free State of Bavaria has a share in the profit.

A domain can contain between 2 and 63 characters (without extension). Umlauts are possible.

At the beginning of January 2020 around 30,500 domains were registered, a good half of them parked .
