1 re division blindée
The 1 re division blindée ( German 1st Panzer Division , abbreviated 1 re DB ) was a tank division of the French army . It was erected in the course of the Second World War in 1943 and existed until 1999 with a two-year break.
history
The 1 re division blindée was set up with US support from Free French units in Mascara in what was then French Algeria . The command of the division was given to Major General Jean Touzet du Vigier .
The unit landed on August 15, 1944 as part of Operation Dragoon in southern France and took part in the battles for Marseille and Toulon . In 1945 the unit fought at the Alsace bridgehead . The unit was disbanded in 1946 despite good probation.
In 1948, however, it was set up again in Trier as part of the Armée française du Rhin . Parts of the division took part in the Second Gulf War. Associations of the division were also in action in Bosnia as part of UNPROFOR and IFOR .
In 1999 the division was dissolved. Their tradition is continued by the 1er brigade mécanisée .
In 2016 the 1er brigade mécanisée was again dissolved and the 1 re division blindée was set up again.
