The 1st National Handball Division is the top division in Belgian handball . The league consists of eight teams. It is subordinate to the Royal Belgian Handball Federation . The record champion is Initia HC Hasselt with 13 championships.

history

The league was founded in 1957. The first official season was held in 1958/59. Since there were no available gyms in Wallonia , all the games were held in Flanders . Alignment sites Mechelen and Antwerp . The first season played eight clubs: Rijkswacht , Lyra HC , Sparta Aalst HC , Geuzen HC , Beyne , ROC Flémalle , Jupille HC and the Herstal HC . ROC Flémalle remained undefeated in the season and secured the first championship. In the following season, the league was increased to nine participants.

In the 1960/61 season, the league is increased to twelve participants. This season ROC Flemalle was again champion and again without losing points. In the 1961/62 season, ROC Flemalle was again champion. It was spectacular this season that newly promoted HC Antwerp transferred the entire squad of league rivals HC Uilenspiegel Wilrijk .

ROC Flémalle dominated the league until the mid-1960s, winning 8 championships in a row.
