1st Destroyer Flotilla (Navy)

The 1st Destroyer Flotilla was a military association of the German Navy during World War II .

history

The 1st Destroyer Flotilla was set up on October 26, 1939 and emerged from parts of the 1st Destroyer Division led by Captain Wilhelm Meisel and parts of the 3rd Destroyer Division and was initially operated until October 28, 1939 Meisel led. From him Corvette Captain Max-Eckart Wolff took command of the flotilla for a few months. On December 5, 1939 , Fritz Antek Berger as , promoted to frigate captain on August 1, 1939, took over command of the flotilla.

The association participated in various companies in the Baltic Sea during the invasion of Poland . After that she carried out a trade and naval war at the approaches to the British Isles. The association was also involved in the Wikinger company. Here at the destroyer Z 3 Max Schultz was lost on February 22, 1940 by a mine hit. The association was also involved in the conquest of Norway ( Enterprise Weser Exercise ). Here the destroyer Z 2 Georg Thiele was lost.

On April 18, 1940, the 1st Destroyer Flotilla was disbanded. The remaining elements were used to set up the 5th Destroyer Flotilla , which Berger also commanded from August 14, 1940 to July 17, 1942.
