1000 year old oak Bad Blumau

The 1000-year-old Oak Bad Blumau , known by the local population as the thick Oachn , is considered the oldest oak in Europe. Within the municipality of Bad Blumau in the Austrian state of Styria , it is located on Eichenweg between Bierbaum an der Safen and Loimeth .
The oak is about 30 meters high, the diameter of the trunk is 2.50 meters, the circumference is 8.75 meters. The crown diameter is about 50 meters. Seven adults are required to encompass the tribe. The space around the tree was previously used as a gathering and dancing place.
In the 1970s, the tree was poured with concrete after a lightning strike . As a result, however, the water could no longer drain and the oak began to rot. This was recognized in 1989 by tree surgeon Manfred Saller, and the core was removed with jackhammers, rotten wood removed, and pipes created for the water to drain. The tree regained its vitality. The work was made possible by a donation from Heidi Horten .
The oak can be easily reached via the Bad Blumauer circular hiking trail 3 or via the bike path FF8.
