Johann Martin Rubert , also Rubbert or Rupert (baptized November 11, 1614 in Nuremberg ; buried May 24, 1677 in Stralsund ), was a German organist and composer .

Life

Johann Martin Rubert probably already received musical training in his hometown of Nuremberg . Before 1644 he was “Princely Margrave Musicus, court organist and valet” in Plassenburg with Margrave Christian von Brandenburg-Bayreuth. In Hamburg he was the first organist known by name at the orphanage from the end of 1645 . In Hamburg he had contact with Heinrich Scheidemann , organist at St. Katharinen, and probably got to know Johann Rist , who later dedicated two poems of praise to him in his Parnassus .

In 1646 he followed a call to Stralsund , where he worked as an organist at the Nikolaikirche , Stralsund's main church, until the end of his life . On May 11, 1646 he married Liboria, b. Lasse, the widow of his predecessor Philipp Caden .

Rubert's compositions appeared in print during his lifetime. The oldest Stralsund hymn book from 1665 contains chants by Rubert. He enjoyed a high reputation in Stralsund and frequented the highest circles in the city.
