Captured by the Austro-Hungarian troops on November 24, 1917 near Chiopris, a 149 mm model 1877 gun with a wheel belt. (The clasp is missing)

The 149mm Model 1877 gun was an Italian cannon introduced into the Italian Army in 1882 as the Cannone 15 GRC / ret . The gun was in use in various designs until the end of the First World War . Due to its caliber size, it belonged to the medium-weight artillery. Typical uses were:

  • as a field gun on a wheeled carriage
  • as a battery gun in stationary installation on a front pivot frame mount
  • as a tank gun under steel domes.

Over the years the type designation has been changed several times. Cannone 149 G ; Cannone 149/23 .

technical description

The design of the gun corresponded to the state of knowledge at the time. The pipe was already manufactured as a jacket pipe. The core tube was made of cast iron, while the jacket was made of wrought iron. The tube was provided with 36 trains. A screw cap with an elastic lid was used as a closure. The tube was still firmly attached to the mount. Since there were no return brakes available around 1880, so-called overrun wedges were used to slow down the return after the shot, on which the carriage ran with its wheels. After braking, the weapon rolled back to its starting position and had to be aimed again. The rate of fire suffered considerably from this process.
