Four residential buildings can be found at 26–29 Shore Street in the Scottish city of Port Charlotte on the Hebridean island of Islay . The houses are on Shore Street in downtown Port Ellen, near the ferry terminal. On July 20, 1971, they were included in the British List of Monuments in Category B as an ensemble . Before the entry was changed in 2004, they were registered under the house names Macmillan (No. 26), Mackinnon (No. 27), Gillies (No. 28) and Sir Duncan Wilson (No. 29).

description

The exact time of construction of the buildings is not known, so that only the 19th century can be given as a period. The self-contained apartment buildings occupy the space along Shore Street south of the junction with Pier Road opposite the pier. Across the street is the rocky coastline of Loch Indaal , where Port Charlotte is located, so this side is undeveloped and the buildings are clearly visible from the waterfront. All four buildings were built in the traditional way on an elongated base. The houses are not structurally identical, but still have something in common. The entrances are located in the center of the front and are symmetrically surrounded by five windows. An exception to this is house number 29, which is a corner house on Pier Road and is extended compared to the rest of the buildings, which has the effect of breaking the symmetry. Although the houses have different gable heights, they are all built on two floors and end with slate-covered gable roofs . What they have in common, however, is that their facades are plastered using the traditional Harling technique.
