1-3 Willow Road

2 Willow Road is the middle section of the three-part terraced house on Willow Road in Hampstead, a northern part of London . The house south of Hampstead Heath was built according to a design (1938) by the architect Ernő Goldfinger . It has been part of The National Trust for Monument Preservation since 1995 . It is one of the first buildings of modern architecture to be accepted by the National Trust, although the construction of the house was very controversial at the time. The architect Goldfinger lived with his family at 2 Willow Road until his death in 1987; his wife lived there until her death in 1991.

1-3 Willow Road was constructed of concrete and clad with red brick. A number of brick Victorian houses were demolished for the construction of these houses . This sparked protests from local residents, including the writer Ian Fleming . Goldfinger designed house number 2 for himself and his family; it is the largest of the three houses and at its core also contains a special spiral staircase designed by the Danish engineer Ove Arup . The completion of the houses was shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War ; Goldfinger moved into house number 2 in September 1939. The structure is supported by an outer concrete skeleton and the interior is generously designed. Goldfinger also designed much of the furniture in house number 2 himself. It also contains an art collection with works by Bridget Riley , Marcel Duchamp , Henry Moore and Max Ernst .

House No. 2 can be visited today. There are private apartments in houses number 1 and 3.
