3001 cinema

The 3001 cinema ( spelling 3001 KINO ) is a program cinema in the courtyard of Schanzenstrasse 75 in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel . Founded by Jens Meyer, Rainer Krisp and Thomas Schröder, it was opened on May 1, 1991 on the former Montblanc site. The program focus of the 3001 cinema is on art house and documentary films, most of which are shown in the original version with subtitles. The cinema has a hall with 91 seats and is a member of Europa Cinemas .

history

In 1990 the city of Hamburg bought the former Montblanc site between Bartelstrasse and Schanzenstrasse. The City of Hamburg made this site available to alternative forms of use. In addition to the 3001 cinema, the building complex also included the alternative hotel and organic restaurant Schanzenstern, the drug aid facility Palette e. V. and the boxing club Epeios e. V. The users based here organized themselves in the Schanzenhof e. V., which in turn acted as the main tenant opposite the city.

In 2006, the CDU-led Hamburg Senate sold 52 buildings and land, including the former Montblanc site. After several changes of investors, the property and the building complex are now in the hands of Maximilian Schommartz and Hans-Werner Schommartz-Kati Grundstücks GbR. In the course of this development, the tenant structure of the ensemble changed. This led to protests in 2016, accompanied by media attention. The protests were primarily directed against the actions of the landlords, with many of the tenants, who had been running their businesses in the Schanzenhöfe for decades, conducting various negotiations for a long time, which ultimately did not achieve any result. Instead, negotiations have already been carried out with possible new companies about rental prices and rental opportunities. These negotiations resulted in the dissolution of the contract and a new contract drafting that included massive rent increases. During the protests, special attention was paid to the Schanzenstern, on whose premises a pizzeria has now started operations. The protests formed in many ways. Demonstrators often found themselves in front of the Schanzenhof, which was inaccessible with a large police presence - with the exception of the cinema entrance. The panes of the pizzeria and the new hotel were also damaged with stones or given slogans and other paintwork. Over a period of several weeks, the Schanzenhof was cordoned off by the police and a security service, who only allowed visitors to the cinema to enter. A meter-long construction fence made it impossible to get from the entrance of the cinema to other parts of the courtyard - such as the inner courtyard of the pizzeria. Most of the original tenants' leases were not renewed. The 3001 cinema was exempt from this, as its lease included an option to extend it until April 2021. However, the cinema also had to experience cuts in everyday operations. While young and old could meet in the courtyard until 2016 and spend their afternoon on the many chairs and tables in the cinema, the landlord forbade the use of the courtyard a short time later and the 3001 cinema not only had to dismantle the tables, but also the bike racks. Another point of contention was the use of the showcases, which should also be prohibited to the cinema, but can still be used today due to an agreement. An extension of the tenancy agreement beyond 2021 is still pending.

Festivals

The 3001 cinema is the venue for many regional and national film festivals. The festivals that take place here include the Latin America Film Days, the Mo & Friese Short Film Festival , the Japan Film Festival Hamburg , the Lesbian and Gay Film Days and the cine cubano. Both the cino cubano and the Latin America Film Days are cinema's own festivals, while the Japan Film Festival Hamburg and the Mo & Friese Short Film Festival take place as guest festivals in the cinema. For years, the 3001 cinema played on the meadow of the Schanzenpark in the open air, which in recent years has alternatively taken place in the Millerntor Stadium on the south stand. There, viewers can watch films on the big screen for around two weeks that have received a lot of attention in regular cinema operations. Smaller productions related to Hamburg are often shown there. At the same time, the 3001 cinema also hosts numerous premieres of large and small productions, at which directors and filmmakers often visit and answer questions from the audience after the film has been shown.

Prices

In addition to receiving the top prize three times for the best documentary film program, the 3001 cinema received the cinema program prize for the entire program in 2008 , awarded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. The 3001 cinema has already hosted the award ceremony twice and receives many of the coveted prizes every year.
