3G-H.324M or 3G-324M refers to a protocol that enables multimedia content in 3G or UMTS networks.

Details

When the 3rd generation ( 3G ) cellular networks were introduced, it was assumed that due to the higher transmission speeds compared to GSM networks, multimedia content would be widely distributed via mobile devices. To enable these multimedia communication services, the 3G-H.324M protocol was required.

Both 3G standardization organizations ( 3GPP and 3GPP2 ) have defined 3G-324M as a solution for voice services over voice-switched networks. Circuit-switching networks (as opposed to packet-switching networks such as the Internet) have been the predominant network for many telecommunications providers. These networks represent a mature technology and are therefore relatively insusceptible to interference. In addition to voice services, multimedia services should now also be ported into these existing networks. These services mainly come from the field of IP telephony . For this purpose, the ITU-T's H.324M protocol was to a certain extent recycled for multimedia services and speech and speech codecs were added.

The following services are known from the field of IP telephony and can be used on circuit-switching networks by using 3G-324M:

  • Video conferences between two or more cell phones or office conference systems
  • Video streaming , i.e. television on the mobile phone with several channels, plus films on demand
  • Real-time games with other users

In the meantime, among other things, through the use of so-called smartphones, packet-switching services for the above-mentioned services have become established. New generation networks have been developed due to the ever increasing volume of data.
