43 reasons it's OFF

43 Reasons Why It's AUS ( Why We Broke Up ) is a 2011 novel written by Daniel Handler and illustrated by artist and designer Maira Kalman. It received a Michael L. Printz Prize. A planned film adaptation with Hailee Steinfeld in the leading role has not been realized.

Min Green, a sixteen-year-old, sensitive, artistic cineast with a subtle circle of friends, and Ed Slaterton, the crush and basketball star of the school team, ended their relationship, which lasted from October 5 to November 12. The story is told in the form of a letter, with Min writing to Ed explaining why they broke up. The letter is accompanied by a box full of forty-three small objects that were important in the course of their relationship; this is sent to Ed at the end of the letter. The box contains bottle caps (the first beer they share), movie tickets (the first kiss), a cardboard camera (Ed's gift for Min), a kitchen towel (when Min met Ed's sister Joan and was even liked by her), dried rose petals (from the flower shop when it all came out), toys, photos, tree seeds, a sugar shaker, a mold that can be used to cook eggs in cubes, and various other things that have accumulated over the course of their relationship. One object after the other is shown in the picture, the associated story is told and is finally placed in the box in front of his room door.

  • Tilman Spreckelsen from the FAZ praises the “brilliant” novel as “one of the most beautiful books for young people in a long time”. He likes how the New York illustrator has painted every object in Min's box “with delicate brushstrokes and courageous coloring”. He thinks it is good that no typical “under-complex” love story is told and diagnoses that Min constantly underestimates her boyfriend.
  • The reviewer of the Focus praises the novel as "one of the most original books for young people in recent years". He points out, however, that Leanne Shapton already had a similar basic idea in her book "Important objects and personal possessions from the collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris".
