5000 Volts was a British disco band or a studio project that became known and popular throughout Europe in the mid-1970s, especially through their hit I'm on Fire . The core of the band consisted of the musicians Tony Eyers and Martin Jay and the singer Tina Charles .

Band history

Jay and Charles were in a band called "Northern Lights" as early as the late 1960s, but then they parted ways again. Tina Charles started a solo career.

The time in the UK rather successful composer and studio musician Tony Eyers wrote the song in 1975 Bye Love and I'm on Fire and recorded a single on with studio musicians around guitarist Martin Jay and Tina Charles.

In Germany the single was first released under the band name "Airbus". When it was due to appear in the UK, however, the A and B sides were swapped, as I'm on Fire had better received by the disc jockeys, and the name was also changed to 5000 Volts. The modified single was also released again in Germany with the addition of "Airbus" in brackets.

Since Tina Charles had an exclusive contract with CBS in the UK , her name did not appear on the album cover and British singer and actress Luan Peters was signed for the band photo .

I'm on Fire reached number 1 on the German charts on December 8, 1975 . The song was a top ten hit across Europe, in Sweden and Belgium it also reached No. 1, in Great Britain the song came to No. 4 and even in the USA it reached No. 26 in October 1975.

Because of the great success they needed a real band and so the line-up was completed by drummer Kevin Wells and bassist Martin Cohen, who had already been part of the band "Northern Lights", as well as keyboardist Mike Nelson. For the next single Look Out, I'm Coming , Tina Charles was officially the singer, but that couldn't prevent the single from flopping in the UK. On the continent, the song appeared as the B-side of Motion Man and that was another chart hit there.

In the meantime, Tina Charles had also recorded two solo singles, which led to disputes and finally to a separation. Tina Charles started a very successful solo career.

Linda Kelly became the new singer of 5000 Volts. With her you recorded the single Doctor Kiss-Kiss , which was once again a top ten hit in Great Britain. However, the band lacked the voice of their greatest success and when other singles as well as an album more or less flopped and only reached lower hit parade positions in a few countries, the band broke up in 1977.
