The 6.5 × 52 mm Carcano cartridge was introduced in Italy in the years 1891–1899 together with the Mannlicher-Carcano rifle System 1891. It served as a model for the 6.5 × 54 mm Mannlicher-Schönauer. Initially, the cartridge was loaded with the two-base Nobel powder ballistite , later with solenite in order to reduce barrel erosion and avoid pressure jumps. A full jacket round head with a lead core was used as the projectile. The cartridge was in military use until 1945 and was manufactured in Italy until the 1970s.
