6-0 defense

6-0 defense

The 6-0 defense formation is a cover variant in handball . In the adult sector, it is the most popular defense variant. In the basic formation, the six defensive players stand defensively in a row directly on their own 6-meter circle.

The principle

The principle of 6-0 cover is to keep the critical depth in the back of the defense, in which opposing attackers can act in the most dangerous way possible, by defensive defense behavior. By positioning all defenders on one line, a high degree of compression is achieved with little opportunity for the ball holder to break through.

Despite the defensive basic formation, the opposing ball holder in the back area is usually attacked more offensively by his opponent in order to prevent throws from distance. In this situation, the player who stepped out of the 6-0 basic formation forms a defensive triangle together with his two defensive fellow men.

application

The primitive basic formation of 6-0 coverage suggests a very simple application. This is a fallacy because, unlike other defensive formations, there are no permanent, exclusively offensive defenders. Rather, the offensive attack of the respective ball holder is resolved according to the situation and requires constant consultation between the defending players.

A 6-0 cover is particularly useful for tall defensive players who, due to their height, can block opposing distance throws instead of attacking the shooter offensively. The defensive basic formation can thus largely remain, whereby the critical depth can be kept very small.

The 6: 0 also applies to immobile players or players who are weak in combat, as it creates little pressure to act for both the attacker and the defender. A 6-0 cover requires less footwork and forces fewer 1-on-1 situations than other more offensive formations.

For this reason, the 6-0 formation in the youth sector, as well as the 5-1 and 4-2 defense, is not permitted in many regional associations . In the field of E-youth, the man marking or the game 2 times 3 against 3 is often required. For example, the Hessian Handball Association is supposed to play 3 against 3 in the first half and with offensive cover in the second part of the game. In the D youth area, open coverage is required and in the C youth area, 1: 5 coverage.

These measures are intended to contribute to a better development of the individual strengths of all players, as the prescribed offensive formations require significantly more willingness to run and active duel behavior from both attacking and defending players.

Position functions

The middle block with the two central defenders plays the most important role. Together with the goalkeeper, he forms the centerpiece. One of the two players in the middle of the defense usually steps out of the basic formation of 6-0 cover in order to attack the opposing middle man or the half-attacker moving towards the middle more aggressively. The runner is handed over to one of the defensively remaining players, which requires a high willingness to communicate and a good understanding of the game among the defensive players. The two half-defenders tend to be less offensive. They block the throws of the attacking back space and prevent breakthroughs to the outside. When blocking, one corner of the gate is covered; in the other is the goalkeeper. In some system variants, the two full-backs have more room to maneuver than is usual in the basic formation. Instead of just preventing the opposing outside attackers from breaking through, they try to take their opponent completely out of the game by offensive covering, so that he cannot even be played by the back area.
