65-68 Main Street (Port Charlotte)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A row of four buildings can be found at 65-68 Main Street in the Scottish city of Port Charlotte on the Hebridean island of Islay . The buildings are on the west side of Main Street in the city center. On July 20, 1971, the buildings were listed as an ensemble in the British List of Monuments in Category B. The house names are occasionally used to specify the buildings . They are beginning in the south: Mclelland (No. 65), Mcsween (No. 66), Fergusson (No. 67) and Beattie (No. 68).

description

The four buildings were built as a closed construction along Main Street and occupy the entire side of the street between School Street and the confluence of the opposite Rhu in the south. They date from the early 19th century. An exact date of construction is not known, but it stands to reason that Walter Frederick Campbell , the laird of Islay, had it built around 1830 when he was developing the Port Charlotte settlement. The buildings are traditionally built according to a similar pattern. The entrance is in the center of the front and is symmetrically surrounded by five windows. A slate-covered gable roof sits on the upper floor . An exception is house number 68, which as a corner house on School Street is extended to this by a few meters, which removes the symmetry. The facades are plastered using the traditional Harling technique.
