68-74 High Street (Brechin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A residential and commercial building is located at 68-74 High Street in the small Scottish town of Brechin in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. It was upgraded to the highest monument category A in 2000. Furthermore, it is part of a category B monument ensemble together with various surrounding houses.

description

The building was erected before 1685. There was possibly a previous structure at the site. A dendrochronological examination dates the roof structure to around 1470. Since the current building dates from the 17th century, it is assumed that the roof structure was taken over from the previous house.

The two-story residential and commercial building is on the High Street near Brechin Cathedral in the historic center of Brechin. It has an L-shaped floor plan. Its masonry is made of quarry stone . The cladding of the storefront on the ground floor with ashlar is more recent. The simple cornice between the floors was also the result of this conversion. Only three of the original four windows on the upper floor are preserved today. A gable rises up about in the middle . All gables are designed as stepped gables . The wing extending to the rear is covered with corrugated iron .
