81-86 Main Street (Port Charlotte)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At 81–86 Main Street , a row of six buildings can be found in the Scottish city of Port Charlotte on the Hebridean island of Islay . The buildings are on the west side of Main Street in the city center. On July 20, 1971, the buildings were listed as an ensemble in the British List of Monuments in Category B. The house names are occasionally used to specify the buildings . They are starting in the south: Macarther (No. 81), Mcindeor (No. 82), Miss Mcindeor (No. 83), Fergusson (No. 84), Mciver (No. 85) and Grier (No. 86).

description

The six buildings were built as a closed construction along Main Street and take up the entire side of the street between Pier Road and the confluence of Shore Street opposite in the north. They date from the early 19th century. An exact date of construction is not known, but it stands to reason that Walter Frederick Campbell , the laird of Islay, had it built around 1830 when he was developing the Port Charlotte settlement. All buildings are built according to the same pattern. The entrance is in the middle at the front. This is symmetrically surrounded by five lattice windows. A slate-covered gable roof sits on the upper floor . The facades are mostly plastered using the traditional Harling technique. Since the land in Port Charlotte slopes towards the east coast of Loch Indaal , the buildings are on a terrace about one meter above the road. The opposite houses, however, are about two meters below street level.
