9012Live: The Solos is the title of a live mini LP and a concert film by the British progressive rock band Yes from 1985. The title is derived from the name of the previous album 90125 . Yes released their third live album with their 16th album.

Emergence

The successful world tour for their album 90125 (February 28, 1984 - February 9, 1985, 139 shows) was followed in 1985 by the release of a mini-LP with recordings from Dortmund's Westfalenhalle (June 24, 1984) and Rexall Place in Edmonton , Canada ( September 28, 1984).

Almost nothing is known about its creation and the preparations for its publication. The album was released in late 1985 when the band was in the process of working on their next studio album, Big Generator . The questions about the part that the band on the one hand and the management on the other hand had in the concept of 9012Live remain unanswered. The mini-LP primarily presents the solos of the five musicians involved ( Jon Anderson : vocals, accompanied by Tony Kaye (Soon) , Tony Kaye : keyboard solo ( Si) , Trevor Rabin : guitar solo (Solly's Beard) , Chris Squire : bass solo ( Amazing Grace ) and Alan White : drum / bass solo with Chris Squire (Whitefish) ). Only Whitefish and Soon had been played before, in different variations, the former in a similar form to 9012Live , the latter as part of a medley (on the Tormato tour) and as part of The Gates of Delirium from the album Relayer ( Soon was also released as a single in 1974).

Since the early seventies it had been customary for Yes to give each of the musicians involved a solo spot in which they could prove their skills on their instrument. On the studio album Fragile (1971), the concept of putting band compositions alongside solo pieces was also implemented on a studio album by the band. However, the solos of the band members had never before been heard on a live album. In this respect, 9012Live is the live counterpart of Fragile : Two band compositions ( Hold On and Changes , both from the then current studio album 90125 ) face 5 solos. From the songs played during the tour (In Dortmund: Cinema , Leave It , Yours Is No Disgrace , Hold On , Hearts , I've Seen All Good People , Si (Tony Kaye solo), Solly's Beard (Trevor Rabin solo), Changes , Soon (Jon Anderson solo), Make It Easy / Owner Of A Lonely Heart , And You And I , Long Distance Runaround / Whitefish (Chris Squire / Alan White Solo) / Amazing Grace (Chris Squire Solo), City Of Love , It Can Happen , Starship Trooper , Roundabout , I'm Down ( Beatles Cover, with surprise guest Jimmy Page ); in Edmonton: Cinema , Leave It , Hold On , I've Seen All Good People , Our Song , Hearts , Solly's Beard ( Trevor Rabin solo), Changes , And You And I , Soon (Jon Anderson solo), Make It Easy / Owner Of A Lonely Heart , It Can Happen , Amazing Grace (Chris Squire solo), Whitefish (Chris Squire / Alan White solo) / City Of Love , Starship Trooper , Roundabout , Gimme Some Lovin ' ( Spencer Davis Group Cover)) were only Hold On and Changes (both recordings from Edmonton) z u hear. This fact was responsible for the fact that the live mini-album only sold slowly and is now difficult to obtain.

The Edmonton concert was filmed by Hollywood director Steven Soderbergh and released in 1987 under the title 9012Live on VHS and later on DVD, albeit incompletely. Excerpts from the concert film ( Hold On and I've Seen All Good People ) also appeared on the video compilation Greatest Video Hits (1991). The Edmonton live recording of the song City Of Love was released in 1987 as the B-side of the single Rhythm Of Love .

To date (spring 2008) no complete concert of the 90125 tour has been published.
