ALICE

ALICE ( A rtificial L inguistic I nternet C omputer E ntity ) is a Chatbot natural language. ALICE was inspired by Joseph Weizenbaum 's ELIZA psychotherapy program .

ALICE is one of the most powerful programs of its kind and has already won the Loebner Prize three times (2000, 2001 and 2004). However, ALICE has not yet been able to pass the Turing test - even an occasional user will quickly discover the algorithmic soul of the program.

The name of the program comes from the first computer (called Alice) on which it was run.

On November 23, 1995, ALICE was presented to the public for the first time on a website. In 1998 the new development began in Java , which ended in the current version "Program D." (a C ++ version also exists). The program uses an XML - DTD called AIML (Artificial Intelligence Markup Language) for specifying the heuristic conversation rules. It's under the GPL .

About 300 programmers from all over the world are involved in the ALICE open source project. The main actor and programmer of the original program is Richard Wallace .

In November 2003, two instances of ALICE competed against each other. The result clearly showed the weaknesses of the program.
