The AB4ü Bay 04 was a bogie through car with side aisle, the sheet no. 45 for the K.Bay.Sts.B. was built for use in express train traffic.
history
At the end of the 19th century, more and more cross-border express train connections were introduced. This forced the railway administrations involved to make appropriately equipped vehicles available as part of the wagon exchange. Since these railway companies were members of the VDEV , only minor additions to the domestic equipment regulations were required, essentially the different braking systems and signal supports.
procurement
As part of the procurement of the second generation of bogie through wagons, the Royal Bavarian Railways administration procured a total of five 1st class wagons for the transition to Austria in 1904, type AA4ü . With the renovation in 1921, half of the compartments were redesigned as 2nd class while maintaining the seating arrangement and equipment, now class AB4ü .
Constructive features
Underframe
As the base frame of the cart connected with the box was already in the wagon according sheet 75 undercarriage constructed entirely of wood, which partially - z. B. for the outer side members - was reinforced with screwed angle iron. Wooden profiles were also used for the cross members. This design promised a smoother run for high-quality cars. The wooden cross members to hold the turntable pans were also reinforced with angle iron. Due to the large wheelbase, trusses with adjustable tie rods were added to support the outer longitudinal members. The buffer beams were built entirely from rolled sections. As a towing device, the wagons had screw couplings with safety hooks according to VDEV, the drawbar was spring-loaded throughout. The wagons were equipped with rod buffers with an installation length of 650 mm, the buffer plates had a diameter of 370 mm.
drive
The wagons had bogies of Bavarian design with a short wheelbase and a frame riveted from sheet metal and angles. The axles were stored in sliding axle bearings. The wheels had spoked wheel bodies and a wheel diameter of 1,014 mm.
Because of the large distance between the bogies, the underframe was supported by a spatial truss in the plane of the outer side members.
Brake: Handbrake in the closed transition at one end of the car. The cars were equipped with Westinghouse air brakes. In addition, they were equipped with Henry brakes and Hardy suction air brakes for the transition in international traffic (Austria).
Car body
The car body framework consisted of a wooden frame work. It was clad with sheet metal on the outside and wood on the inside. The side walls were smooth and pulled down over the outer longitudinal beams. The cars had a barrel roof of the southern German design without a skylight structure.
The interior had a total of six compartments with upholstered seats. The compartments were closed with sliding doors facing the side corridor. All seats could be converted into sleeping camps. At both ends of the car there were toilets that were combined with washing facilities.
The wagons were heated by steam .
The ventilation took place via roof vent or via the retractable windows.
The lighting was done by gas lamps . The two storage containers hung on the frame in the longitudinal direction of the car. From the 1930s onwards, it was converted to electrical lighting.
comment
In 1921 the existing wagons were converted to AB4ü Bay 04/21. Three compartments were relegated to 2nd class. The seating arrangement (previously 4 people in the compartment, now 6) and seating have been changed. With the renovation in 1930, the toilet facilities were changed and the side walls of the compartment sides were renewed. The previous double windows per compartment were replaced by larger single windows.
