The Atlético Club San Martín de Mendoza was founded on December 22nd, 1927 in the city of San Martín , now with about 70,000 inhabitants in the province of Mendoza in western Argentina . The club colors were set to red and white when it was founded. The newly founded club initially played its home games on a meadow in San Martín, and it was not until 1956 that they moved to a real stadium with the opening of the club's Estadio General José de San Martín . The sports facility now has space for 8,782 spectators.

In the first decades of its existence, AC San Martín did not play nationally in the league. The first promotion to the Primera División , the highest Argentine football league, came in the 1967 season . In the Torneo Nacional that year they reached thirteenth place and could not qualify for the following season. In 1969 they were represented again in the Torneo Nacional and finished this in twelfth place in the table, which again was not enough for a qualification for the next season. Again two years after the last first division stay, San Martín de Mendoza played first class again in 1971. The group A of the Torneo Nacional 1971 finished the team in ninth place, which for the first time succeeded in relegation to Argentina's top division. As a result, the AC San Martín played the Torneo Nacional of the Primera División without interruption until 1971. In the 1972 edition , the team even reached fourth place in Group A and thus missed qualifying for the semi-finals by only four points compared to today's Argentinian record champions CA River Plate . It was even closer in the 1974 season . Here they ranked third in Group D of the Torneo Nacional, just one point behind CA Independiente , which qualified for the final round of the Nacional championship. Nevertheless, AC San Martín did not play first class in 1975, but only started again in the Torneo Nacional of the Primera División in 1976. The result was fourth place in group C. Two years later came third in group C and again narrowly missing the final round. Compared to CA Colón , San Martín separated a point. Colón met Independiente in the quarter-finals and lost to the eventual champions 2: 4 on two legs.

AC San Martín had its last first division season to date in the Torneo Nacional in 1980 . In this one took the sixth of seven places in group B. After that, the club gradually disappeared from the big stage of Argentine football. After years of regional football you found the AC San Martín between 1997/98 and 2005/06 in nine consecutive seasons in the Primera B Nacional , the second highest Argentine league in football. After that, however, the club went down again, so that today you can find him in the Torneo Federal B, the fourth highest football league in Argentina. Overall, AC San Martín is still the second most successful club from the province of Mendoza in the Primera División, only behind the current first division club CD Godoy Cruz .
