The ADC Airlines flight 86 (flight number Z7086 (IATA) or ADK086 (ICAO)) was a domestic flight of Nigerian airline ADC Airlines of Port Harcourt to Lagos . On November 7, 1996, a Boeing 727-231 with the registration number 5N-BBG was involved in an accident on this flight , in which all 144 people on board were killed.

Airplane and occupants

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 727-231, which was 23 years and one month old at the time of the accident. The machine was the work of Boeing on the Boeing Field in the state of Washington assembled and completed on 29 April 1969 its first flight before re on May 15, 1969 to the Trans World Airlines was delivered. The aircraft had the factory number 20054, it was the 718th Boeing 727 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration N64321 . On July 6, 1995, the machine was sold to ADC Airlines, where it received its last registration 5N-BBG . The three - engine narrow -body aircraft was equipped with three Pratt & Whitney JT8D-9A engines.

the accident

The test carried out on that day with a Boeing 727-200 flight 86 of the ADC Airlines led from Port Harcourt airport to Lagos airport . The machine was approaching Lagos and was flying at an altitude of 24,000 feet (approx. 7300 meters). At the same time, a Triax Airlines aircraft operating Flight 185 from Lagos to Enugu was flying at an altitude of 16,000 feet (approximately 4,880 meters). The air traffic controller on duty at air traffic control in Lagos gave the ADC Airlines pilots permission to descend. He mistakenly believed that he had previously given them clearance to descend to 10,000 feet (approx. 3000 meters) and that the machine was already on a flight level below the Triax's aircraft. While the pilots were lowering the aircraft, the Boeing Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System suddenly activated . The pilots then carried out an abrupt evasive maneuver. In doing so they brought the machine into an oversteering rolling motion from which it could no longer be intercepted. The pilots lost control of the machine. Within sixteen seconds, the machine assumed an excessive roll angle , eventually fell on its back and fell to the ground at almost the speed of sound . The machine crashed at 5:05 p.m. on impact near Imota (Ejirin), killing all 144 people on board.

root cause

Responsibility for the accident was primarily given to the air traffic controller on duty in Lagos, who had not separated flights ADK 086 and IDX 185 with the necessary care. The oversteering of the pilot in charge of the Boeing 727 would also have contributed to the collision.
