Federal Song Festival 1893

The 19th Federal Singers' Festival took place from July 8th to 10th, 1893 in Basel . A total of 4600 singers took part in 89 clubs.

The festival was organized by the Basel men's choir - without the participation of the Basel Liedertafel, which, like many other choirs from other cities, had previously rejected. The request to hold a celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Choir Association (now the Swiss Choir Association ) could not be met.

After various discussions in the aftermath of the last festival, a new division of the competition categories was introduced: easy folk song (category 1), difficult folk song (category 2), easy art song (category 3) and difficult art song (category 4). The jury was also newly expanded to include three committees in order to better cope with the large number of presentations. In addition, the previously abolished ranking system was reintroduced.

Former National Councilor Gustav Adolf Saxer acted as party president . The presidents of the jury were the Lucerne General Music Director Gustav Arnold , the Bern organist Carl Hess and Gottfried Lochbrunner from Montreux. The complete performance, now divided into two parts, was conducted by Ernst Kempter from Basel , Eduard Vogt from Freiburg and Karl Attenhofer from Wettinger .
