Gustav Adolf Saxer (born November 2, 1831 in Altstätten , † June 10, 1909 in St. Gallen , entitled to live in Altstätten and from 1860 in St. Gallen) was a Swiss politician ( liberal / radical ) and a bank employee .

Gustav Adolf Saxer was born on November 2, 1831 in Altstätten as the son of the council clerk and cantonal police inspector Johannes Saxer and Elisabeth, born Grob. Saxer completed his studies in theology and law at the universities of Berlin and Tübingen and between 1853 and 1854 in Zurich .

As a result, Gustav Adolf Saxer initially worked from 1855 to 1857 as an employee in the law office of Joseph Karl Pankraz Morel before he was appointed secretary of the department of guardianship and poor affairs. In the same year he took over the position of police secretary, which he held until 1861. Finally, he was director of the St.Galler Kantonalbank from 1870 to 1900 . In addition, between 1885 and 1906 he was President of the Church Council of the Reformed Cantonal Church.

Gustav Adolf Saxer married Anna Maria in 1857, the daughter of the stonemason and citizen council Johann David Wild. He died on June 10, 1909 at the age of 78 in St. Gallen.

Political career

The free-spirited politician Gustav Adolf Saxer was a member of the constitutional council of the canton of St. Gallen from 1859 to 1860 and in 1861 at the beginning of his political career . At the same time, he served as mayor of the city of St. Gallen between 1860 and 1861 . Also in 1861 he was elected to the St. Gallen Cantonal Council , of which he was chairman until 1878 and which he chaired several times. In addition, he was represented in the government council from 1862 to 1870 , first as head of the police department and from 1864 of the education department.

In addition, he took a seat on the Council of States for the canton in 1872 , and then on the National Council until 1878 . In 1875 the radical democratic left nominated him as a candidate for the Federal Council election .

Gustav Adolf Saxer earned special services to the state secondary schools, the non-denominational elementary school of the city of St. Gallen and the Reformed cantonal church.
