Joseph Karl Pankraz Morel

Joseph Karl Pankraz Morel (born February 8, 1825 in St. Gallen ; † December 13, 1900 in Lausanne ) was a Swiss lawyer and politician .

Life

Born the son of a cloth merchant, Morel studied after attending the Catholic high school in St. Gallen Catholic theology and later law in Tübingen , Heidelberg , Lausanne and Paris . During his studies in 1843 he became a member of the Germania Tübingen fraternity . After completing his studies, he was an advocate in St. Gallen from 1850 to 1874 . From 1861 to 1865 he was president of the lower court there and from 1859 to 1874 in the local council. From 1861 to 1874 he was on the Grand Council of St. Gallen, 1866 and 1871 as its president. In the years 1866 to 1869 and 1873 he was also President of the Court of Cassation in St. Gallen. From 1869 to 1874 he was a Councilor of States . From 1870 Morel worked as a federal judge at the Swiss Federal Court in Lausanne, from 1874 to 1900 a member of the permanent federal court there, and in 1879 as its president. From 1891 he was an honorary professor for constitutional law at the University of Lausanne .
