ADEOS ( English Ad vanced E arth O bserving S atellit , Japanese み ど り , Midori ) (subsequently renamed to ADEOS-I or Midori-I) is an earth observation satellite of the Japanese space agency NASDA , which a launch vehicle of the type H-II on August 17th Brought into an approximately 800 km high sun-synchronous orbit in 1996 from the Tanegashima Space Center . The launch mass was 3.56 tons, the electrical output of its solar panels 5 kilowatts.
In June 1997 the solar panels were damaged and the satellite was defective. The satellite is still in orbit.
ADEOS / Midori was the first satellite in the ADEOS series. The second, ADEOS-II / Midori-II was launched in 2002. Unfortunately, he suffered a similar fate. Instead of the planned mission duration of 3 years, contact was lost after about 300 days.
