The Akaflieg Karlsruhe AK-5b is a glider , the successor to the AK-5 . This type has changed some of the negative characteristics of the original AK-5. In the club operations of Akaflieg Karlsruhe , the AK-5b is the first training single-seater due to its good-natured flight characteristics.

As a transitional project, the AK-5b was supposed to close the gap between AK-5 and AK-8 . However, in the course of development it was decided to make some changes to the design. The AK-5b was built with carbon, aramid and glass fibers. The control was redesigned, due to a lack of kinematics programs, the construction was tried out and calculated mathematically in AutoCAD. In contrast to the AK-5, which has a glass wing parallelogram control, the AK-5b has a swivel stick control. In addition, the hood construction has been redesigned according to the latest findings in crash safety . It got a new opening and emergency release mechanism.
