AN / FPS-35
The AN / FPS-35 is a military air surveillance radar from Sperry . The first device was delivered in 1960 and installed in Thomasville (Alabama) , followed by another four devices by 1962. A total of 12 devices were built and put into service.
The radar device was erected in a fixed location in five-story concrete towers. Due to the enormous mass of the antenna of over 80 tons , considerable problems arose during operation. The drive of the antenna took up a separate floor and was accomplished by six electric motors with 100 HP each .
With the exception of the device in Camp Hero State Park in Montauk , New York , all other radar devices have meanwhile been dismantled.
