Developed by: ARINC
Type: Navigation data
Extended by: Text format
Standard (s) : ARINC 424-20

ARINC 424 is a data format for the exchange of navigation and communication data between the various stakeholders in aviation e.g. B. Aviation Authority → Data Provider → Device Manufacturer.

The introduction of computer-based navigation systems (FMS) in airliners required a uniform data standard. ARINC 424 was developed by AEEC in the 1970s and published by ARINC . The first version was officially released in May 1975. The current version (as of January 2014) is ARINC 424-20. It was published in December 2011.

The standard is not public, but can be purchased through ARINC.

format

The format has a fixed length of 132 bytes per record. In a record, the various navigation information such as are waypoints (English waypoints ) beacon (English navaids ), airways (English airways ) or arrival and departure routes ( STAR , SID described).

In addition to defining the file format, the ARINC 424 specification defines a series of rules that describe how the data should be interpreted. (e.g. naming conventions for waypoints)

According to ICAO Annex 15, the navigation data must be renewed in a 28-day cycle, the AIRAC cycle (English Aeronautical Information Regulation And Control ).

use

Commercial data providers offer navigation data in ARINC-424 format.

  • DAFIF
Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File is a collection of datamade available to the publicby the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA). The public publication of this data was discontinued in 2005 due to suspected copyright infringement. The data collection is still available to official government agencies and partners of the US government.
  • AICM & AIXM
Various areas of aviation do not yet have globally established standards for data exchange, e.g. B. Airport cartography, terrain data, aviation obstacles. ARINC424 is only established in the field of flight management systems. With AICM and AIXM, two standards have been established within Europe that allow data to be exchanged between aviation information centers.
  • ARINC424A ( NDBX , ARINC829)
As a result of the Lufthansa initiative, a new format was developed in 2006 under the name NDBX (later ARINC829). The goal was an open source data format that can be read directly by future flight management systems. Due to concerns about the risks of a "parallel" data format, it was decided in 2008 that the current NDBX development should be merged with ARINC424. The new standard ARINC424-A will include the advantages of NDBX and modernize the "old" ARINC424 standard.
