The ATEbank , ( Greek Αγροτική Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος Agricultural Bank of Greece ) originally comparable to a Raiffeisenbank , is a private bank founded in 1929 with headquarters in Athens , Greece .

In the 19th century, bank lending was restricted to merchants in Greece. At some point the National Bank of Greece also granted loans to farmers, but only expressly as a temporary measure with the recommendation to found a cooperative bank for these purposes. Finally, ATEbank was founded in 1929, initially as a non-profit organization, to provide credit to the primary sector. Alexandros Koryzis became the first director .

In 1990, ATE Bank expanded its activities beyond the primary sector and began trading on the Athens Stock Exchange in 2000. In the wake of the financial crisis, the bank had to make large write-downs, large parts of the bank were taken over by Piraeus Bank in 2012 , so far the ATEBank has continued as a brand.
