AVO is a cigar brand of the Oettinger Davidoff Group . The brand is manufactured by Avo Uvezian in the Cibao Valley in the Dominican Republic .

When jazz musician Avo Uvezian settled in Puerto Rico in the 1980s , he opened a restaurant and a piano bar. It was there that he discovered his passion for cigars and soon had his own made for private use. While looking for a suitable manufacturer, he met the cigar producer Hendrik Kelner in the Dominican Republic in 1982. Avo Uvezian called his first cigars “Bolero”, but since this trademark was already protected in the USA, he later gave them his own first name. His guests were so taken with the cigars that he tried his luck as a cigar maker.

Avo Uvezian sent some samples of his cigars to the Davidoff shop in New York. As the demand increased, it was agreed that the Davidoff store would take over the distribution of AVOs in the USA. In the first year Davidoff sold 125,000 pieces, after three to four years sales rose to 750,000 pieces. The brand was then bought by the Oettinger Davidoff Group. However, Avo Uvezian continues to be responsible for the production process and the blends.
