Aad Wagenaar (* 1939 ) is a Dutch journalist. In 1994 he discovered the name of a nine-year-old Sintezza , who was considered to be Jewish until then.

Life

Wagenaar worked for the Haagsche Courant and in 1990, together with his colleague Paul van Beckum, received the Dutch Prijs voor de Dagbladjournalistiek for a series of articles on the Dutch nobility.

In April 1970 Wagenaar attracted attention with the publication of a book about the bombing of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940. It contained hundreds of interviews with contemporary witnesses, including German generals, paratroopers and crews of the bombers of Kampfgeschwader 54 .

In December 1992 he began researching the identity of a girl who was deported from the Westerbork transit camp during the Second World War . The recordings came from the German director Rudolf Breslauer . They showed the girl looking out the door of a departing carriage for seven seconds. The picture became a symbol of the Holocaust , although the girl's identity was unknown. Wagenaar researched using a numbered suitcase that appears in the film that it was not a car with Jews, but one with Sinti. On February 7, 1994, in a conversation with the Sintezza Crasa Wagner, he found out that the girl's name was Settela Steinbach . It later became clear that Settela was gassed with her mother and five of her nine brothers and sisters in Auschwitz. The four older Steinbach siblings were killed in other camps.

Wagenaar published the history of his research in a book.
