The Aarey Milk Colony ( Marathi : आरे मिल्क कॉलोनी) is located near Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra . Around 16,000 buffaloes are kept in around 30 stables on a total area of around 1200 hectares . The dairy operated here was the largest in Asia when it was founded in 1951. After the Sanjay Gandhi National Park , Aarey is the most important green area in Mumbai.

history

During the Second World War , the Mumbai city administration established a milk distribution system to prevent the war-related undersupply of pregnant women and children. This organization existed until 1946. As a result, hygienic problems arose in the decentralized milk production in the city area. The Aarey Milk Colony was founded in 1949 to improve both the breeding and keeping of dairy cattle. Around 16,000 buffaloes were transferred to Aarey from the previously existing 30 dairy farms in Mumbai. In 1951, the first dairy plant in Asia that could pasteurize milk was set up here . In 1958 the city administration introduced a department for the development of dairy production in Aarey, and from 1960 the milk produced in the surrounding area was also processed by the dairy in Aarey.

today

Only about a third of Aarey's land is used for fodder production. In addition, agriculture and forestry are practiced. The colony has a hospital and a primary school for the children of around 600 employees, and it also operates its own hospital. Restaurants are available for tourists. Since the keeping of the animals (e.g. tethering ) has changed little since the colony was founded, the milk production results are lower than that of younger competing farms in the Mumbai area.

Since 2014, plans by the city administration to give parts of Aarey a partially commercial land development have met with resistance from the population. With the establishment of the Save Aarey Community , the implementation of the corresponding development plan (DP 2034), which includes the construction of a training facility and a parking lot, is to be prevented.
