In 2008 Burkhart was already second behind his Citroën team-mate Sébastien Ogier . In the following season Burkhart then switched to Suzuki and then won his first JWRC rally, the Rally Ireland, with a Suzuki Swift S1600 and achieved third place in the overall standings. Burkhart made his debut in a WRC car at the 2009 Rally Great Britain for the Citroën Junior Team. Here he reached the 12th place. In 2010 he won the JWRC classification at the 2010 Rally Turkey and reached 10th place overall, with which he also received a world championship point. In addition to other prizes, he was the first German after Walter Röhrl to win the 2010 Junior World Rally Championship in a Suzuki with a lead of four points over Hans Weijs jr. in Spain.
