Abu l-Hudhail

Abū l-Hudhail al-ʿAllāf ( Arabic أبو الهذيل العلاف, DMG Abū l-Huḏail al-ʿAllāf ; about the middle of the 8th century - about the middle of the 9th century) from Basra was the first speculative theologian of the Muʿtazilites .

He used the name al-ʿAllaf because he lived in the quarter of the fodder sellers (Arabic al-ʿAllāf ) or belonged to this guild himself. The Kunya al-ʿAbdī suggests that he was Maulā of the tribe of ʿAbd al-Qais. He received his religious education in his hometown. Abu l-Hudhail was a student of ʿUthmān aṭ-Ṭawīl, in turn a student of Wāsil ibn ʿAtāʾ, the founder of the Muʿtazila. Abu l-Hudhail was married to the sister of ʿAmr ibn ʿUbaid. Abu l-Hudhail spent a long time in Baghdad. There he took u. a. in scholarly disputes with Yaḥyā b. Ḫālid al-Barmakī. He spent his old age in Samarra . He probably died there too.

The school of his followers, reported by Ash-Shahrastani in his Kitab al-Milal wa-n-Nihal , is called Hudhayliyya:

“They believe that both Hell and Paradise will perish and that preordination of Allah can cease, at which time Allah will no longer be omnipotent. (Eng. They believe that both Hell and Paradise will perish, and that God's predestination can cease at what time God will no longer be omnipotent. ) "
