Henrik Samuel Nyberg (born December 28, 1889 in Söderbärke , † February 9, 1974 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish orientalist , who v. a. worked on topics of Iranian studies , in particular on Middle Persian and the pre-Islamic Iranian religion.

Life

Nyberg was born in 1889 as the son of Ida Jansson and Anders Fredrik Nyberg, a cleric plagued by financial worries, who also took Nyberg's first education up to the age of thirteen. Instead of studying theology like his father, he went to Uppsala after attending a grammar school and studied at the local university a . a. classical and Semitic languages ​​as well as Sanskrit. In Uppsala Nyberg was a lecturer and professor in Semitic studies , where he took over the chair of his teacher Karl Vilhelm Zetterstéen in 1931 . In 1956 he retired.

Nyberg's students included Geo Widengren , Helmer Ringgren , Stig Wikander , Sven Hartman , Bo Utas and Judith Josephson . From 1948 until his death in 1974 he was a member of the Svenska Academies . He was also a member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies (since 1935) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (since 1943).
