Abbeydorney Abbey (or O'Dorney Abbey , Irish Mainistir Ó dTorna , common Latin name: Kyrie eleison, probably due to the location in Kerry) is a former Cistercian abbey in County Kerry in the Republic of Ireland . The ruined monastery is nine kilometers north of Tralee in the north of the village of Abbeydorney .

history

The monastery was founded in 1154 and was a daughter monastery of Monasteranenagh Abbey (Nenay Abbey). Thus it belonged to the filiation of the Primary Abbey Clairvaux Monastery . Christian O'Conarchy, Abbot of Mellifont , retired to the monastery and was buried there in 1186. In 1227 the monastery was involved in the Mellifont conspiracy and its abbot was deposed. The monastery was dissolved in the time of Henry VIII in 1537, but monks stayed in the monastery until 1577. The property passed to Edmund Lord Kerry, who received the title of Baron O'Dorney.
