Location of Nakhon Suvarnabhumi in Thailand

Nakhon Suvarnabhumi ( Thai นคร สุวรรณ ภูม , pronunciation: [ ná.kʰon sù.wan.ná.pʰuːm ], city of the golden land ) is the name of a planned new province in central Thailand , east of the capital Bangkok . The area extends around the new Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport .

In order to form the new province, the Khet Lat Krabang and Prawet from Bangkok and Bang Sao Thong and Bang Phli from the Samut Prakan province are to be outsourced. The province would then have an area of 521 square kilometers with about 462,000 inhabitants.

The plans were announced in October 2005, followed by a legislative proposal approved by the cabinet in June 2006. Under this proposal, the province would be run by a governor appointed by the Home Office for the first four years. There is also the establishment of a 30-member control committee under the leadership of the Thai Prime Minister . It is also planned to make Nakhon Suvarnabhumi a special economic zone, with an elected governor, as is the case in Bangkok.

The project has been on hold since the 2006 military coup . The Bangkok authorities and parts of the affected population are critical of the plans.
