Abbeymahon Abbey ( Irish Mainistir Ó mBamhna or Mainistir Ó mBána , Mahon, Maure; Fons vivus) is a former Cistercian monk abbey in County Cork in what is now the Republic of Ireland . The former monastery was about 2 km east-southeast of Timoleague and a good 20 km southwest of Kinsale , not far from the south coast of the island, at the mouth of the Argideen River.

history

The monastery was founded in 1172 by Dermot MacCormac MacCarthy, King of Desmond, as a daughter monastery of Baltinglass Abbey in Aghamanister and thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Monastery Abbey . Almost a century later it was moved to Abbeymaure. In 1278 Diarmait MacCarthaig was buried in the new monastery. In the 13th century, the abbots of the relatively poor monastery were reprimanded several times for not taking part in the general chapter of the order. At the time of the dissolution of the monastery (1541 or 1544) it emerged that the abbey church was used as a parish church and the other monastery buildings were used for agriculture. In 1568 the monastery property was given to the Viscount Barrymore and in 1584 transferred to Nicholas Walsh, the judge of Munster.

Buildings and plant

The eastern part of the church and the remains of the tower have been preserved.
