Abd al-Hamid ibn Turk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abd al-Hamīd ibn Turk (around 830), also known as Abd al-Hamīd ibn Wase ibn Turk al-Jili , was a 9th century Muslim mathematician of Turkic origin .

biography

Little is known about Ibn Turk's biography. The two accounts of Ibn Turk written by Ibn an-Nadim in the 10th century and al-Qifti in the 12th century contradict each other. Based on the name al-Jili given by al-Qifti, it is assumed that Ibn Turk came from what is now the Iranian province of Gilan .

Works

Ibn Turk wrote a book on algebra called Kitâb al-ǧabr wa` al-Muqâbala . Of this, only the chapter entitled Logical Necessities in Mixed Equations has been preserved. It deals with the solution of quadratic equations, whereby Ibn Turk also made use of geometrical representations for demonstration and evidence purposes. The geometric proof presented in mixed equations in Logical Necessities can also be found in a more imperfect form in Al-Khwarizmi's work al-ǧabr , which is why some historians assume that algebra at the time of the two mathematicians was already more developed than previously assumed.
