Abd al-Karim Abdullah al-Arashi

Abd al-Karim Abdullah al-Araschi ( Arabic عبد الكريم عبد الله العراشي, DMG ʿAbd al-Karīm ʿAbdullāh al-ʿArāšī , according to the English transcription often al-Arashi ; * 1934 in Sana'a ; † June 10, 2006 in Saudi Arabia ) was a Yemeni politician and briefly president of the Yemen Arab Republic .

After the 1962 revolution, al-Arashi gained influence and participated in several military campaigns in defense of the revolution.

As spokesman for the People's Constituent Assembly, al-Arashi succeeded the assassinated President Ahmed Hussein al-Ghashmi on June 24, 1978 , but was replaced by Ali Abdullah Salih on July 18, 1978 .

He then resumed his work as President of the People's Assembly and also became Vice President. He was also Minister of Finance twice. In addition, al-Arashi was Minister for Local Administration and as such reformed local government law. In 1988 he was then elected President of the newly elected People's Assembly ("Majlis asch-Shura").

After the reunification of the two previously independent Yemeni states in 1990, al-Arashi first became a member of the Presidential Council. In 1997 President Salih appointed him his advisor.
