Abdirahman Mohamed Farole
Abdirahman Mohamed "Farole" (* 1942 ; spelling in Somali : Cabdiraxham Maxamad Farole ) was elected President of the de facto autonomous region of Puntland in northeast Somalia on January 8, 2009 .
He comes from the Nugaal region . In the 1990s he was the governor of his region while serving on the UN mission in Somalia. In Puntland, which declared itself an autonomous region within Somalia in 1998, he was temporarily finance minister.
Due to differences with the then president of Puntland Mohamud Muse Hersi , he became the leader of the opposition in Puntland in early 2006. Abdirahman Mohamed Farole lived in Australia for a year and a half , where he obtained a PhD from La Trobe University . He returned at the end of 2008.
On January 8, 2009, Farole was elected by the Puntland Parliament with 49 votes out of 66. He announced a new constitution and the introduction of a multi-party system. He also promised to promote social development, to introduce a kind of welfare system, to improve the security situation and to combat piracy off the Somali coast , which originates mainly from Puntland.
