Jama Ali Jama

Jama Ali Jama was appointed president of the unilaterally autonomous Puntland in north-western Somalia in 2001.

Political life

After the end of the term of office of President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed , who had declared the internationally unrecognized independence of Puntland from Somalia, the council of elders of Puntland called for new elections. On November 14, 2001, he elected Jama Ali Jama from Boosaaso as the new president.

However, Yusuf did not recognize his successor. He initially withdrew to Gaalkacyo, only to return to the capital of Puntland, Garoowe , in May 2002 at the head of loyal troops and to declare himself the counter-president. In the same year he also took Jama's stronghold Boosaaso, whereupon Jama temporarily withdrew to Qardho and the Sanaag region in Somaliland , which was unilaterally declared independent . Confrontations between supporters of Yusuf and Jamas lasted until 2003. Jama Ali Jama was supported by the transitional federal government , Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed of Ethiopia and the SRRC . In May 2003, Yusuf signed a peace agreement with Jama's deputy Mohamud Muse Hersi .
