Abhainn Dearg (English pronunciation: [ ˈævɪn ˈdʒɛrəɡ ]; Scottish Gaelic for "Red River") is a whiskey distillery in the northern part of Lewis on the Isle of Lewis and Harris , an island in the Outer Hebrides .

history

The Abhainn Dearg Distillery was founded in 2008 by Mark Tayburn near Uig .

It has been the first legal distillery in the Outer Hebrides since 1828.

production

The distillery has a mash tun in which 500 kg of malt can be mashed, a fermentation tub with a volume of 7500 l and two stills with a working volume of around 2000 l each. It is emphasized that no color is added, nor is cold filtered . The distilling capacity is given as 40,000 liters, a small amount compared to other distilleries.

Sightseeing

The distillery has a visitor center and guided tours are offered regularly.

Products

In 2011, the first bottling was presented after the minimum storage period of three years. At the moment (2/2017) two products are available:

Spirit of Lewis

According to the distillery, this whiskey is made according to a 400-year-old recipe and should therefore taste new or unusual.

Abhainn Dearg single malt

A single malt with no age information. It ages in oak barrels and is not filtered.

The first ten-year-old single malt called "Abhainn Dearg X Single Malt" was launched.
