Abilass Jeyarajah

The four-month-old Abilass Jeyarajah (* 19th October 2004 ), also known as Baby 81 referred, was a baby in the flood disaster from 26. December 2004 in Kalmunai, Sri Lanka has been torn from the arms of his mother and to the identity of a a dispute that lasted seven weeks. The infant became a symbol of the fate of countless children who had been separated from their parents. He was called "Baby 81" because he was the 81st person to be admitted to the local hospital after the tsunami .

Nine couples claimed to be the infant's parents. Only one couple, Murugupillai and Jenita Jeyarajah, had formally applied for custody of "Baby 81". But because they had lost all their belongings in the flood, they could not prove their information. A local court ruled that the baby had to stay in hospital until its origin was clarified by means of a DNA analysis . On February 14, 2005, a judge announced that the Jeyarajahs were clearly the parents of "Baby 81" according to the genetic test. They were able to bring Abilass home shortly afterwards.

Artistic reception of the topic

The Californian rock band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club named their record Baby 81 , released in April 2007, after this event.
