Abney Park Cemetery
The Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington in north-east London is one of the Magnificent Seven known seven major historic commercial cemeteries in London.
history
An 18th century historic park was converted in the 19th century to establish the cemetery. The original Abney Park was established by Mary Abney and Isaac Watts and the neighboring Hartopp family.
With the establishment of the cemetery, the function of the park changed to a non-denominational cemetery with a semi-public arboretum and an educational institute. The facility was hailed as an example of its time. The cemetery was used as a burial place from 1840 to 1974/8. The complex is now partially overgrown, similar to Highgate Cemetery , another cemetery of the Magnificent Seven.
In the crime novel Who Doomed by Elizabeth George , Abney Park Cemetery is the scene of a murder.
